One on One with Ujwal Puri

Tell us about you and Life before photography

my name is Ujwal Puri and my Instagram handle is "ompsyram" I am 33 years old I am from Mumbai India . Before photography I was and actually still am running my own business . I am a businessman and I manufacture embroidery polyester yarn. I usually travel 140kms total to home and work.

How did photography happen?

Photography was never part of the plan , I was always intrigued with the sky , sun , and clouds. Growing up I used to love watching storms so I guess it picked up from that.

I used to click only from a mobile phone and it was just a budget phone I used snapseed and became more fond of it. Then my family and friends suggested to get a better phone and try so I did and invested in an iPhone 7 so I started learning , composing and did my bit with that. Then I started using the manual Pro Camera app and tried. But there were limitations.

"I never restrict myself to any specific genre I like to try out all"

As I couldn’t adjust the aperture in it. There was a time around then where I had some personal decisions to make and I quit drinking alcohol from then on and started using photography as an active addiction and woke up every morning to meditate and click pics. I started reading, learning and practicing. I then invested in a mid range dslr, a Nikon D5600 with 2 lenses the kit lens and a telephoto. Long exposures Sunsets sunrises, chase storms during the monsoon. I then got my first paid job and got many more after. I never restrict myself to any specific genre I like to try out all. I got more paid assignments through word of mouth .

Favourite Subject to shoot?

​My favourite subject is the sky . Everyday it’s different there is so much to see I know people can get bored of it easily but I find it peaceful . I love to capture my city and the beauty of it. I like to show the cityscapes and some daily life . I love to shoot lightning and thunderstorms the adrenaline rush from that is something to experience .

My camera gear is my Nikon D5600 18-55mm 70-300mm and a 35mm 1.8 prime , Gopro Hero 8 , A mobile phone â€‹
