Who is Maharshi patel?

My name is Maharshi Patel & I'm 25 years old. I was born and brought up in Mumbai, India. I'm an Architect & I absolutely love designing spaces. Though, apart from that I'm also a self taught photographer. I completed my graduation in Architecture few years back in 2017 and since then I've taken photography as my professional career.
"I've turned my hobby of photography into a full-time professional career."

How did you get into photography?

Architecture is a 5 year-long degree course and it demands a lot of time, energy and hard work. So in those 5 years I never actually got time to focus on my hobby and enjoy it. In spite of that I used to take out some time on weekends and go out on photowalks. I joined Instagram in Dec 2013 and came across few groups of photography enthusiasts who used to go out on photowalks twice or thrice a month. This was a good opportunity for me to test my skills and do photography more seriously.
Picture
I made new friends on these photowalks and with these like-minded people, it was a great way to learn new things! Healthy discussions about photography helped me to take my knowledge a step above. I learned a lot from watching videos on YouTube! It's a great space to master your skills. Since then, I've turned my hobby of photography into a full-time professional career.

your favourite subject to shoot and why?

Photography is a vast field. It has many areas of specializations within it. To thrive in the field of photography, one must have a set of qualities and skills like - Passion for photography, creativity, will to travel and work at off timings, patience, concentration, technical expertise, communication skills & lastly computer and software skills. Luckily, I had acquired most of the above skills in my B.arch course since it's also designed for creators and designers. One thing that was left to do was 'technical expertise' & to master this I decided to learn all the genres of photography and not just one. I used to target 1 genre for a period of 1 week and in that I just have to focus on the chosen style of photography. From basics to choice of lens, use of light, composition, editing approach, suitable camera, lenses & its technical side for each genre.
Picture
So, week after week I mastered different genres like portraits, wildlife, architectural, landscape, documentation, product, sports, events, low light & light paintings one by one. By the time I completed this process, my control over the camera was so commanding and easy that I could assess the scenario and set the camera settings in just couple of seconds. Today, I'm open to almost any sort of assignments and projects because I've invested plenty of my time to go deep into each of those genres.

Though my favorite subject to shoot will always be documenting various festivals and different cultures along, landscape, travel & portraits. Being an Architect, I really enjoy shooting interiors and spaces since I can very well understand the concept and approach of the designer. Making it easier for me to portray the space in right perspectives.
Picture

what editing softwares for you use the most?

I've tried lot of different softwares and apps in the past but as of today my main softwares on my PC are Adobe Lightroom CC & Photoshop CC.
Some of the apps on my phone for quick mobile editing includes Lightroom mobile & Snapseed.

Picture

Your go to camera gear?

I've a large set of camera gears and equipments, but my go to items include - Sony A7Miii, Sony 16-35mm F2.8 GM, Sony 35mm F1.8, Gopro Hero 7, DJI Mavic Pro 2 and lastly small yet very capable Google Pixel 3 XL.
"One can never learn art completely & we all remain learners for the lifetime."

tips to budding photographers?

My tip to the young and budding photographers will be to believe in themselves and that there's nothing impossible. The goal is always achieved after climbing number of different steps. Some steps are smaller and easier to climb while some are bigger that takes some time & efforts to climb off. I believe, Photography is all about art & creativity, and there is no limit to it. One can never learn art completely & we all remain learners for the lifetime.

Tell us about you and Life before photography

my name is Ujwal Puri and my Instagram handle is "ompsyram" I am 33 years old I am from Mumbai India . Before photography I was and actually still am running my own business . I am a businessman and I manufacture embroidery polyester yarn. I usually travel 140kms total to home and work.
"quit drinking alcohol from then on and started using photography as an active addiction..."

How did photography happen?

Photography was never part of the plan , I was always intrigued with the sky , sun , and clouds. Growing up I used to love watching storms so I guess it picked up from that.

I used to click only from a mobile phone and it was just a budget phone I used snapseed and became more fond of it. Then my family and friends suggested to get a better phone and try so I did and invested in an iPhone 7 so I started learning , composing and did my bit with that. Then I started using the manual Pro Camera app and tried. But there were limitations.
Picture
"I never restrict myself to any specific genre I like to try out all"
As I couldn’t adjust the aperture in it. There was a time around then where I had some personal decisions to make and I quit drinking alcohol from then on and started using photography as an active addiction and woke up every morning to meditate and click pics. I started reading, learning and practicing. I then invested in a mid range dslr, a Nikon D5600 with 2 lenses the kit lens and a telephoto. Long exposures Sunsets sunrises, chase storms during the monsoon. I then got my first paid job and got many more after. I never restrict myself to any specific genre I like to try out all. I got more paid assignments through word of mouth .

Favourite Subject to shoot?

My favourite subject is the sky . Everyday it’s different there is so much to see I know people can get bored of it easily but I find it peaceful . I love to capture my city and the beauty of it. I like to show the cityscapes and some daily life . I love to shoot lightning and thunderstorms the adrenaline rush from that is something to experience .

Who is Ashraful Arefin?

My name is Ashraful Arefin, I'm a 33 years old Photographer. I was born and grew up in Dhaka, Bangladesh and currently based in the same city. Before starting photography I was a student of Fine Arts and I completed my bachelors in Graphic Design.
"I was never happy as a graphic designer"

How come photography?

I bought my first camera back in 2010 when I was studying Fine Arts. I bought it to take some high-quality photos of my artworks. But eventually, I fell in love with the art of photography. I was never happy as a graphic designer, there was so much pressure, and pursuing perfection took away the fun of creating.
So I decided to take a break from my usual works and started doing a 365 photography project and that changed everything. Photography totally opened my eyes and heart. I
completely fell in love with it and decided to follow this path. â€‹
"I have always been fascinated by fairytales and magical stories..."
Picture
"On the streets, I don't have much control over my subject or surroundings"

your favorite subject to shoot and why?

I started my photography journey shooting still life images and it's still my most favorite genre to work with. I love the fact that I can create a certain mood or story without even using people. I also love to shoot the streets and people.
On the streets, I don't have much control over my subject or surroundings in comparison to still life photography.  I really love that challenge. Also, there are so many opportunities to create storytelling images in the streets.

Picture
Picture

How do you find inspiration for your fineart photos ?

I have always been fascinated by fairytales and magical stories so they are biggest inspiration. Also books like Harry Potter, Alice in Wonderland, Tim Burton movies has inspired me.

What editing software(s) do you use the most?

For my images, I only use Adobe Photoshop. â€‹
"Don't be afraid of mistakes"

camera gear?

Right now my
Nikon D850 with the NIKKOR 105mm F/1.4E ED
and
NIKKOR 85mm F/1.8 G lenses.

Here is a little sneak peak on how these images are made

Average time from shooting to posting a photograph?

It could take 3-4 days from coming up with the concept to shooting and post processing. Sometimes even more depending on the amount of composite work needed. I usually go back and forth a lot to find the mistakes and rectify it, that's why it takes longer time.

Go to stock websites for other fine art /composite photographers?

Pexels and Unsplash are two free stock photo websites I can recommend. Though I mostly shoot my own stocks. It’s much easier to match the images shot from the same camera and settings. Also Flickr and DeviantArt are great sources for textures, editing resources and stock images.

tips for budding photographers

This is Art and everyone does it differently so there's no right or wrong way, there's only your way. So do it from your heart and the way you want it.

Don't be afraid of mistakes, they will teach you better than any classes or tutorials. Learn the rules so you can break them and most importantly enjoy the process.

A special interview with Chris and Danika Garlotta

Picture

Haven't been home in almost 3 years

Where is Home?

"The world! - We literally travel full time and haven't been "home" in almost 3 years"

With these two, I skipped my usual one on one questions and jumped straight to the main course...

What's your story? From quitting  jobs and being on the road forever?
In her blog, Danika says;

"On October 9th, 2013 we were having cocktails at the Cavalier in SF and between a Scotch Egg and a Old Fashion cocktail, my husband said “let’s take a sabbatical.” It was so random and unexpected,  I though he just liked the word sabbatical. I rolled my eyes, said okay and moved on to my chicken dinner. Several cocktails later, it was decided, we would take the next 6 months off and travel around the world."
(via nodestinations.com)

Chris and Danika took there first flight to Italy and have rented there house in San Francisco. Now travelling the world while currently in Argentina.

We literally take our luggage from one airbnb apartment to another

How often do you travel?
We travel full time...and have been doing it for almost 3 years. We literally take our luggage from one airbnb apartment to another or one hotel to another

How do you choose the places you want to see?
Some are bucket list items that we've dreamt about forever - like Machu Pichhu, Alaska, Paris, Maldives and others are less known places that have been recommended, like Malta, Palermo and more

Do you make money while traveling?

CHRIS: I help businesses plan, design, and launch websites and web applications. This includes everything from helping to figure out what the product will do, the strategy, what features it will include, the design, and how its’ implemented.
I also maintain a web application I founded a few years ago called ZingSale.com which allows users to create price alerts for any product sold on Amazon. Basically when the price drops on a particular item, you get an email letting you know.

DANIKA:I work with businesses to help identify their social media strategy and get it going, or to help them get back on track with actionable content. This includes everything from coaching employees and giving them tools and feedback to actually creating and designing social profiles for companies. I also do marketing design - creating banners, landing pages and other marketing collateral for a handful of clients.

Where do you live?

I live in a little town in Tuscany, Italy, called Campiglia Marittima

Most of your photos play with hands and feet. What's the story behind this kind of style?

I love to put myself in dangerous places, because I like the feels...I just feel more alive when I sit on the corner of the rooftop, so i decided to make a series of the feet in danger places, and I like to put hands too in my feed because they could help you to make a great photo in a boring background.

I just have my own preset which will be online in my new website soon(i'm working on it). Basically I change a lot, tweak colors and curves. I also use vsco cam and i love HB2 (my favourite filter)

Don't copy other people, because people want something unique.

What profession(s) would you associate yourself with? And what advice would you give to someone wanting to join the same?

I finished my school in July and I started to work in a reception of a holiday village. Now I'm trying to improve myself in photography. I make portrait sessions, and other functions, and not to forget my work on Instagram!

My advice to new aspirants is to improve your style! Don't copy other people, because people want something unique. You can only create your identity in this industry by being just like you, and people will like you, only you! If you copy from others, people might like your style but you won't be able to create your own identity.... so you need to think!

When you photograph places, things or people, what are you trying to capture and reflect? Or are you simply snapping around?

A photo posted by Instagram ↟ Mattia Cecchetti ↟ (@matcecche) on Sep 3, 2016 at 2:05am PDT

Personally I just want to explore and snap. Usually I go to places with my reflex and shoot everywhere!

What camera gears do you use?

I use a Nikon D5000 with a 50mm, 18-55mm and a 12-24mm.

How do you market your photography? (if you do so)

I market them by creating portraits and selling photos!

One on One with landscape photographer Mital Patel

Picture

Home and Childhood

"Born and raised in Texas.. grew up in a family that embraced travel experiences. Early on as a child, my parents had taken me to many places (India, England, New York, Orlando, etc..).  Being an Indian American, we still had a lot of family living in India that we would visit often."

If you could live anywhere on this awesome planet, where would you build your dream home?

"One home would not be enough! Each place is so unique with it’s own beauty.  I tell my friends that there’s a reason why I am living in Dallas, it gives us a better appreciation of the beauty elsewhere.  I would hate to live in an incredible place, but get spoiled with the beauty and not value it as much.  Don’t get me wrong, Texas is a great place."
What sort of Photography genre do you specialise in and how long have you been a photographer?

"I have focused more heavily on landscape photography.  I would say I have been aggressively shooting landscape since 2014.  Prior to that, I was just shooting “blind”."

Did you go to school to study photography?

"No, but have learned quite a bit from other photographers by attending a few photo tours and workshops."

What or who got you started in photography?

"I got my first camera, a Canon AE-1, when I was 12. It was a gift from my dad. He was our family’s official photographer since before I was born. We’re big on tradition, so as my parents’ first born, I was next in line for the duty. I learned how to use a camera shooting my family and our community."

How would you describe your photography style?

"
I think I am still developing my style, but if i were to give you an answer today, I would say my images tend to be a little more dramatic with a tad bit darker edit."

What camera gears do you use and whats your
favourite photography accessory, other than your camera ?

 "
I am shooting with Nikon D810 with the trinity set of lenses - 14-24; 24-70; 70-200.  Also, just picked up an 85mm 1.4 to dabble in portraits.  My favorite accessory might be my 10 stop filter.  I love being able to make my skies much more dramatic with the long exposures."
Picture
If you had to choose one lens for the rest of your life, which one would it be and why?

"
As of today, I would say my 14-24.  I really enjoy shooting landscapes.  It allows me to be out in nature and to harness that peaceful state of mind keeps me “alive”."

How important is post production  retouching in your final images ?

"It is very important since I shoot in RAW.  It allows me to express my vision and emotions through my images."
Picture
Can you briefly explain how you achieve your photos from Raw to the final image.

"
I first import the photos in to Lightroom, have all of my images organized in their libraries.  I go through my photos and rate the images that i wish to edit.  I then start making some basic “camera raw” edits in lightroom.  I then export the file in to photoshop for further editing.  There are many different adjustment panels that i use which is dependent on the photograph."

MAC or PC ?
"Mac"

Do you plan on buying any new equipment and if so what do you have your eyes on?

"I
have been eyeing the Mac Pro. I would love to get some retina friendly dual display monitors. I recently just purchased the wacom tablet, and love using that.  It has made my editing much more efficient and easy."

What are your go to settings for shooting outdoors?

"I like to shoot at ISO 30, f/18, and shutter speed would be depending on the scene, and circumstance."

Picture
What gives you ideas and inspires you to create such imagery?

"Social media, other photographers, national geographic, and the “land” itself.. seeing in person the places, and envisioning how the scene could be photographed."

What has been your most memorable assignment and why?

"Shooting in the arctic regions of Iceland and in Canada. I like the challenge of harsh weather. It keeps us in check that no matter what, mother nature wins."

Where would be your dream destination assignment?

"New Zealand and Australia."

What do you think of the photography industry at the moment and where do you see it in 5 years from now?

"It has become very mainstream, and more popular than ever.  With the ease of cameras, technology, and social media, we are blasted with hundreds to thousands of photographs daily... its hard to tell where the industry will be in the next 5 years.. there is so much innovation happening."

A photographer who inspires you?

"Ansel Adams, Marc Adamus..."

A website and/or blog you visit often?

"fstoppers"
.

What advice do you have for somebody who wants to pursue photography?

"Don’t get frustrated with the results of your photos when comparing to others, keep shooting -  lot of trial and error"
Picture
How do you find new places to explore for your image style?

"Well, i’m not generally picking a destination to fit my image style. I like to go and visit places I have not seen.  Either I do really well because some of my favourite shooting styles/scenes are available, and sometimes its a real struggle because its a totally different type of shooting than what i’m used to.  I just try to make the best of it and hopefully come to learn another shooting style."

A Thank You Note for Mital Patel

I came accross your profile through Dani Diamond. The moment I saw your photography, I had to get you on my One on One segment. It has been amazing to know your story and photography. Hope to see more stunning landscapes through
your camera.
Thank you once again.

Travelling the world with an iPhone

One on One with passionate traveller Miles Gray

Home and Childhood

"I was born in a small town that no one has ever heard of, but when I was young my family moved to the sunny Gold Coast in Queensland. It is best known for the golden sand of Surfers Paradise beach."
Gray currently resides in the southern most city of Australia - Hobart, Tasmania!

Happy Friday! I don't know about you, but I'm having the best week. Anyone else want to visit my pet kangaroo? □□□□ #DiscoverTasmania #SeeAustralia #Tasmania #Australia

If you could live anywhere on this awesome planet, where would you build your dream home?

"I would have two - a summer shack on the East Coast of Tasmania, then when it starts to get too cold for me, I'd move back towards the equator, anywhere that has a sea view really."

How often do you travel?

"I have at least one overseas trip a year. More, if I can get away from work easily. Living in Australia makes international travel difficult. If you're leaving this island, it's got to be for at least 3 weeks otherwise you waste too much time in transit. But once a month I'll do a domestic trip somewhere."

□ I bow to the sun □ The only place not pouring with rain this weekend is the trusty East Coast of Tasmania. Always warmer, always stunning. #discovertasmania

What has been the longest travel you have ever done?

"My longest trip was actually my most memorable, and it was around South America for almost 2 months."

How do you choose the places you want to see?

"I have a list of places I've wanted to visit since I sat down and wrote it as an 18 year old. I'm slowly ticking them off as I can, but I usually add other destinations based on where I have to transit with airlines to make use of flight networks.

Your top 7 places so far? (Countries)
  1. Australia
  2. Peru
  3. Namibia
  4. Portugal
  5. Argentina
  6. South Africa
  7. Ecuador (the Galápagos Islands specifically)"

How do you budget and save for your travels?

"I'm terrible at budgeting. I don't have a travel budget. I just do the trip the best way I can, and if it costs too much, then I just save for longer before I go again. I always hold the belief that it may be my only opportunity to visit a destination, and that I should do so in the most ideal way (which is often the most expensive unfortunately haha)."

Are you a travel photographer? Tell us your best story.

"I am a traveller first, and I like to share the places I visit. I wouldn't like to steal the title of photographer from trained professionals. My favourite and most popular travel photo is probably this shot."

This has to be the highlight of my life. Known as Dead Vlei or "dead marsh" (Vlei being Afrikaans for a type of marsh), it is found among the tallest and oldest dunes in the world. Dead Vlei was once like Sossusvlei, with the river draining into it nourishing desert life and even trees. But no longer. Some 900 years ago the climate dried up, and dunes cut off Dead Vlei from the river. It became too dry in Dead Vlei for the trees to even decompose. They simply scorched black in the sun, monuments to their own destruction. The trees, now over 1000 years old, form a barren forest. #MnMDoAfrica #NOFILTER #NOEDIT ?✨?

"We basically ended up in the desert in 50 degree Celsius heat due to time constraints of government rules around entry times. Soon after this one the rest of the shots show me in nothing but underwear as it was just too hot to keep hiking over dunes in black pants!"

Do you make money while traveling? If yes then how?

"Sometimes through my agency if they've organised the trip, or through promotional posts for companies."

What profession(s) would you associate yourself with? And what advice would you give to someone wanting to join the same?

"I spend most of my time as a physiotherapist these days. I wouldn't suggest trying to build an Instagram following to support a full time career anymore - the app has changed too much! I'm excited for whatever the next social media platform turns out to be. Perhaps snapchat?"

Do you do sponsored Instagram posts?

"Not as often as people probably think. I find that sometimes sponsored posts can be very obvious and limiting for the art direction I have in my mind during any of my adventuring. But if it is the right fit, it will never be a challenge to incorporate into a shot, they are the things I agree to support because I believe in them or already use them personally."

What do you intent to reflect through your photographs?

"It's a total mix of spontaneous moments along with being inspired by another image or video I've seen and want to have my own take on."

And that's a wrap from Simbavati River Lodge □✨□ #MnMDoAfrica #sunrise

What camera gears do you use?

"Just my iPhone!"

A Cape at sunset shot was not easy to achieve by any means. 1. Climbing this far out onto a dolerite column was not the smartest thing I've ever done. 2. Ending up with a return trek through dense bush in pitch black dark for two hours was not sensible. But life is for living! ✌□️✨□ #DiscoverTasmania

How do you market your photography?

"I market myself as one avenue to give exposure to a particular experience or product."

What made you get the travel bug, do you think you are addicted to travelling?

"My parents always travelled a lot when I was growing up. So much that I'd have to move schools and stay with my grandparents if they were gone for a while. I'd always admired that they saw their personal growth through travel as a major priority, and as soon as I turned 18 organised a big trip around Europe and I've continued for the ten years since."

That one factor that you love about travelling, which actually keeps you wanting to travel more?

"The many people I keep meeting on my travels. They make me want to continue, or even offer to come and meet me in some other new place!"

Miles is currently travelling between Greece and Turkey.
So I asked him to give some vital information, while he is on the road!

A brief break down of the itinerary

"I'm spending 4 days alone on the hidden gem of a Greek island - Kea, then I'm off to the wedding party in Mykonos and the wedding I'm MC for in Santorini. The group is then spending the post wedding days on Milos.
From there I'm heading off alone to the Amalfi coast, visiting Positano, Capri and Sorrento
(Italy).
Then I'm doing some work with the ministry of tourism in Israel, heading to Jerusalem and tel aviv. And finally a little sneaky stop in Cappadocia on my way home."

Why did you choose these places?

"Well this trip is based around my best friend's wedding. Then the rest of the stops were based on flight paths and always wanting to go to Israel."

What is the cost?

"Flight ferries and trains around 4000 Aud (Australian Dollars)
Hotels have cost about the same as its peak season!"

I am living for white rendered buildings TBH □□□Also of note, I did not burst into flames upon opening this gate □

One on One featuring landscape and seascape photographer Matti Boeschote
Picture

Home and Childhood

Matti moved in to Helsinki, Finland 3 years ago from the Netherlands, where he spent his early years.
“I am a 28 year old guy born in Finland, after my birth I moved to the  Netherlands where I lived most of my life.  3 years ago I followed my heart back to Finland, where I met, now the mother of my child.
My childhood was pretty normal. You always read a lot of stories of people getting into photography at a very young age. I’m not one of them. I started like a lot of us amateurs out there. A small compact camera (back then with 4mp and a tiny digital screen) to take nice pictures on holidays. Also the idea of making pictures and getting them directly on your computer or TV screen was something amazing.”

If you could live anywhere on this awesome planet, where would you build your dream home?

“Just from a photography point of view I could name a lot of places, and of course if money is not an issue. I pinned down 3.

  • Alberta Canada would be one, the scenery there is just stunning. In addition to the ever changing seasons, it makes up for a perfect place. Lake Louise is definitely a must go at least once in my life.
  • Second would be probably California. Especially since the scenery there is so diverse. You have beautiful nature all around you, from Big sur, Death Valley to Yosemite NPS. All amazing places where I could just wander around for days, weeks and months.
  • Third option, I would like to say New Zealand. As a landscape photographer I don’t think that needs a lot of explanation ”

What sort of Photography genre do you specialise in and how long have you been a photographer?

“Mostly landscapes and seascapes with a hint of cityscapes once in a while.”
Picture
With a young interest in cityscapes, the ever-changing beauty of nature always grab s Matti’s attention.
“Being all alone enjoying the nature sounds is so relaxing compared to crowded cities. Living in Finland with the extreme seasons gives so many different opportunities. In the summer you can enjoy endless long golden hours due to the nightless period. In winter you can capture the beauty of a snowy and icy landscape. I still do enjoy shooting in the city as well, capturing everyday life and movement is always a challenge.”

"As long as you keep sitting inside or wondering what could have been, you’ll never get the shot you are dreaming of.”

Did you go school to study photography?

“Nope, I am a so called ‘self-taught’. Learning through the Internet and mostly by just getting out there.  I think that is the most important thing I learned in the last year or two; going outside, taking the shots is the most important thing. As long as you keep sitting inside or wondering what could have been, you’ll never get the shot you are dreaming of.”

What or who got you started in photography?

“I borrowed a DSLR camera from a friend when we went on a trip to New York and I was so impressed by the picture quality and possibilities that I bought my first own DSLR (Nikon D3100) shortly after we got back. From there it developed to a holiday kind of photography.”

How would you describe your photography style?

“I find it difficult to really describe my style especially since it’s something that is developing all the time.”

Trying to capture nature’s beautiful colors, Matti explains his style with a critical twist:
“A popular style at the moment is that of low contrast and bright lights and more dimmed down colors. I really enjoy this style but I don’t think it's something I am looking for. The beautiful color of our nature is what makes me happy and it’s something I want to share. I also think you always pick up something from what  style is in ‘fashion’ at the moment.”

"A decent tripod is what every (Landscape) photographer should have in his bag."

What camera gears do you use and what’s your favourite photography accessory, other than your camera?

“Nikon D7200 DX DSLR teamed up with a Sigma 18-35 F1.8 and a Sigma 10-20 F4-5.6.
Picture

"I upgraded a year ago from my small and old D3100. Quite a nice step up, and a great combo with the 18-35. The 10-20 is showing his age and is in need of an update."
Buy now at Nikon.com
“My favourite accessory is definitely my trusted tripod. I think a decent tripod is what every (Landscape) photographer should have in his bag. It gives you so many possibilities in every lighting condition and it makes you think so much more about your composition. And also, what I noticed is that it gives you peace and time to think about what you are shooting and how. Especially beginners seem to be struggling with image sharpness due to camera shake whilst trying to capture low light images.”

If you had to choose one lens for the rest of your life, which one would it be and why?

“I would stick with an ultra wide lens since I just love to  focus and capture small details combined with wide views of a dramatic scenery. So to sum up, it would probably be the Nikkon 14-24mm. A state of the art lens that would fit my style.  I would also love to own a Zeiss made lens, for example a Distagon 15mm. The quality of this lens is just amazing, maybe one day :) ”

How important is post -production retouching in your final images?

“Post-production is a big part of my images definitely, and it is also a thing I enjoy doing almost as much as the actual capturing of the images. There are a lot of situations in the field where I think of the post-production possibilities and know already what kind of feeling I want to create."
Picture
Before
Picture
After
Rule number one is always to get a good composition and exposure; it cannot be that you have to fix the basic things in post-production. Post-production for me is more to help the camera with things it cannot do itself.
For example extend the dynamic range by bracketing. I also think it is very important not to change the reality too much. What you see a lot these days is people making composites of 2 or 3 different photos. Making the audience believe for example that a milky way can be seen from everywhere in every direction.  I don’t think I will bring my retouching that far. I love to look at those pictures though but for me it is not the essence of photography.”

MAC or PC ?

“PC :) I have thought of Mac a lot of times but I would require too much changing of my workflow.”

Can you describe for the readers your photographic workflow in few steps?

“This picture was taken on a beautiful autumn morning in Finland. After finding a good composition I start thinking of what kind of photo I want to create. Since it was autumn, with the last mist disappearing from the lake, I wanted to create a more mysterious atmosphere.”

“Since I bracket my photos, it starts by checking out the different exposures in Lightroom. Mostly I look at the histograms and see if there is any detail lost in the shadows or in the highlights. Since the dynamic range of single exposures is so good these days, the shadows can be saved most of the time. When you lose data in the highlights it starts to get troublesome. Then I remove the chromatic aberrations and straighten the picture by applying the lens correction.”

In this example (which is the normal exposure) you can see there isn’t much detail neither in the shadows nor in the highlights.
Picture
Normal Exposure

For this I grab the overexposed photo. You can see that the light parts are too bright but the foreground gives us good detail.
Picture
Same goes for the sky, in the normal exposed one you can see it maybe a couple of stops overexposed. Exposing on the sky gives us a better result.

I have been using Photomatix for blending the 3 bracketed photos. It does the job quite nicely but I’m learning to do it with Photoshop so the loss in picture quality is less. For beginners, Photomatix (or NIK HDR Efex) are great programs to get the hang of blending, there is always the danger of creating these infamous HDR pictures, nobody likes. :)

Picture

After we let the software do its job, our picture looks like this. Now we have details in the foreground and the background, plus our sky looks like it should be.
Picture
But it still doesn’t have the magic and atmosphere I am looking for.
First I crop and fix the parts of the composition I don’t like. In this example the branches on the left and some small dust spots from the sensor.
Next I add some split toning to add more orange/yellow color to the light parts in the sky and because I want a bit more mysterious feel, I add some blue tones to the shadows. At this point I also try the shadow and highlights sliders to get the right feel. I don’t really have a rule for this, but I guess that it’s a matter of taste. If you want to create more drama, dark shadows can add to the effect, emphasizing the light

At this point the picture is almost there where I want to have it, all I do now is some fine tuning. First the horizon is a bit tilted, so I turn it so it’s straight.

Picture
I added still some warmth and lifted the foreground colors with a light brush.
As a final touch we add some sharpening, I used to do this in Photoshop or Lightroom but since Google’s NIK Sharpener Pro 3 is free of charge I’ve started to like this plug in more and more.

Our final picture looks like this:
Picture

What is your favourite image you have shot recently? Can you describe its creation in regards to location, lighting, composition etc., also your thoughts when creating the image and what it means to you?

“This is one of my favourite places to go. A small nature reserve with lovely small lakes. In the spring time the sun sets right behind the tree line. I really enjoy shooting lakes and jetties. They add great depth to a photo and give you the feeling to jump in the water."
Picture
"Also the reflection of a calm and quiet lake has something magical to it. The composition I wanted is the sun setting behind the trees lighting up the sky with color. Again I used the bracketing technique since the dynamic range of this scene was too wide for a single shot. In the end I got the nice colorful shot I was looking for.  Of course, when shooting landscapes you cannot predict what kind of photos you go home with. But every weather and light gives it’s own atmosphere. I’d say that a clear blue sky is the most difficult thing to work with.”

A photographer who inspires you?

“Konsta Punkka, A young Finnish guy who makes absolutely beautiful artwork. You should definitely check him out on Instagram."

These are just two that came quickly to my mind. I think what is amazing these days is that you can get inspiration from so many different places. There’s Instagram where the type of photography is again very different if you compare it to, for example, with 500px.”

A website and/or blog you visit often?

“Digital Review forum is a great place to read and discuss about photography. I especially enjoy reading up on the news and new rumours of upcoming lenses or cameras”

“500px  has also been a big place for inspiration. Although, I noticed that the best way to become popular is to post really extreme edited photos. I got a bit lost in that as well at one point. I guess it is something we all had, over editing photos to the extreme. Then you look at the photos a couple of months later and start to wonder what was wrong with me.”

If you could be invisible for one day with your camera...

“I think it would be very cool to do this with wild life. For example getting up real close to a bear or lion, showing their natural environment whilst also capturing all the great details of these stunning creatures.”

Something you’re still learning?

“I think there is always something to learn, in life and in photography. We had a baby boy just three months ago; this is a whole new thing for me to shoot people and moving objects. So learning a lot about auto focusing and also the post processing of people requires a different view.
Then there is no such thing as a perfect shot; there is always something that I think could have been better.”
Picture

What photographic ambitions have you not yet achieved?

“There are two things on my near future wish list: shooting night starry skies and while living in Finland: the auroras. Now we are heading into summer so this will be impossible but definitely next fall/winter, I’ll be wandering around in the dark :)”

What would you like to be doing in 5 years from now?

“In 5 years from now, I hope I can go out into the nature with my then 5 year old son and enjoy the beauty of it together. I hope he will be interested in photography as well, but you never know :) ”

"Always shoot RAW"

Your best tips on retouching and some before and after retouching photo results.

1. When shooting always look at your histograms and with the dynamic range of the cameras these days, shadows can be mostly saved, blown out highlights cannot so meter for the highlights and work with the shadows in post. Additionally, always remember to level your shadows  carefully, maintaining the natural touch. If you have a sunset, there will always be deep shadows, don’t lift them too much.

Picture
2. Be careful with the vibrancy and saturation sliders. We all like to make the colors pop, but there is a limit. In my opinion, post production is about emphasising the atmosphere you were looking for when you were shooting.

3. Always shoot RAW and use bracketing/blending when there’s a big dynamic range (Deep shadows, bright highlights)

One on One featuring traveller and entrepreneur Karley DeCocker and Ben Ulusaraclar

Picture
New York and Germany based traveller, photographer, social media influencers and ambassadors, the ideal wanderlust couple share their journey around the world, some memories and valuable tips to get you started. Read it all in this exclusive One on One segment

Home and Childhood

Karley grew up spending most of her time outdoors with her family in the countryside of New York State. “Fishing, hiking, camping, swimming, boating and campfires describe my childhood”.
Ben liked playing outside with friends going on new adventures mainly trying to stay out of trouble. “I remember running home as quick as I could for my mother’s to-die-for cooking”

How did Karley and Ben meet?

Picture
“We met in Melbourne on a travel website where travellers meet and possibly travel together. We didn’t link up right away and we accidentally bumped into each other in Cairns when we were both traveling on our own.

We were surprised to see each other and had a nice time chatting about our experiences.

After that it was history!”

Karley and Ben started travelling together since when?

“We met in Australia on both of our own first solo trips and bumped into each other twice and kept in touch. We became best friends and our friendship blossomed into a lifelong everlasting romance. You can say we found each other through travel.”

How often do you travel?

“Permanently, traveling is our lifestyle. We are currently traveling throughout Asia and making our way back to Europe and then to the East coast in America.”

What has been the longest travel you have ever done?

For Ben it was a 30 hours night train from Stuttgart to Berlin and a flight to New York and a bus to upstate New York.
“This wasn’t my most difficult travel but I sure was exhausted once I finally arrived. I will travel any amount of distance to be with my love.”

How do you choose the places you want to see?

“We usually choose places that we have either been on our travel list or we hear about new places when we are traveling from locals and we “do as the locals do”.  We try to travel with as few plans as possible and make our plans as we go. We have seen some of the best places that way."
Picture

How many countries have you visited so far

49!

Your top 7 places so far? (Cities)

Melbourne, Bangkok, Penang, Munich, Antwerp, Cairns.

“These places we have spent some of our most cherished moments together.”

What made you get the travel bug, do you think you are addicted to travelling

“We both love exploring new places, which means we have to travel to be somewhere completely new. New food is always fun to try as well as being immersed in a new culture. We are comforted that the world is large place to explore! Karley is working on being able to draw out the entire world by memory.”

How do you budget and save for your travels?

“Prepare, plan and save… SPEND… REPEAT. Here’s a useful tip, try not to spend money on too many things like objects save your money to spend on experiences.”
Picture

What is TimeOutSociety ?

“We are connecting people with the world by sharing photos and stories to encourage travel and to take time out of your day to chase your passions in life.

If you could live anywhere on this awesome planet, where would you build your dream home?

“Hmm that’s a tough one. Melbourne is our favourite city so possibly there!”

Are you a travel photographer?

Karley: “Yes, Ben started taking photos 5 years ago."
Ben: "Karley has been learning since we met and is doing extremely well."
Picture

When you photograph places, things or people, what are you trying to capture and reflect?

“Our main focus is to show how life looks at each place we go to.  Some days we are on a mission to photograph specific things and other days we just walk around and see what happens…some of our best photos have been taken this way.”

Did you ever go on a Solo trip? If yes then when, where and how was your experience?

“We both travelled to Australia on our own and made friends along the way. Solo trips turn into a not so solo trip if your lucky and you can meet other like minded people who share the same interests as you.  We both fell in love with Australia because there are so many travellers looking to make friends and at the same time see and explore the country!

Do you make money while traveling?

“Our travel funds are prepared before we actually travel."

What profession(s) you associate yourself with? And what advice would you give to someone wanting to join the same?

“We are social media influencers, entrepreneurs, travel guides, photographers, and ambassadors. We recommend that if you want to do anything start now and start building up your own social media accounts such as Instagram with your own photos, experiences, and hobbies!”

What camera gears do you use

“Canon 550D and our phones when we don’t carry our camera with us.  Also our little Gopro!”

That one factor that you love about travelling, which actually keeps you wanting to travel more?

“Meeting new friends is always a huge plus because its another reason to travel more to see them again! We always say “It’s never goodbye it’s see you later”!
A Thank You Note for Karley and Ben

When I came across your quirky gallery I knew it will be wonderful to have a feature on you. Thank you for sharing your travel stories, tips and experiences. Hope you have a great time in Philippines.

Wishing you both all the best.

With Best Regards
Chris
